Purple Mattress

Purple Mattress
Rating: 4/5

After owning the same conventional mattress for 6 years and suffering through daily back pain and uncomfortable nights sleeping for 4 months, it was time to get a new mattress.

The need was made even more clear when I spent a week out of town for work and slept on a nice, fresh, unworn mattress. The first few nights were uncomfortable but by the end of the week my back was feeling normal and I was sleeping without a problem. Upon returning home I knew that this was a purchase we couldn’t delay any longer.

My wife and I had talked about the need for a new mattress after we realized that we had both been sleeping poorly for a few weeks prior, and waking up with lower back pain for me and upper back pain for her. We’d identified the need for a solution but we were struggling to find the right mattress to get.

The mattress shopping started with us talking about things that we didn’t want; something that would end up squeaking, a bed that wouldn’t end up sagging in the middle, her being able to sleep through the night as I turn from side to side (something I tend to do I guess), and the ability to have a cool night’s sleep from start to finish.

That ruled out conventional mattresses pretty quickly, we were left with the newer fancy, alternative material mattresses. Even then the field was pretty wide, so we needed to narrow the choices down. Looking at the composition of all the options it became pretty clear that the mattresses were all more similar than they were different. We needed to figure out what made them different.

So we started looking at the warranties and reviews for all the different companies out there. We looked at Nectar, Tuft and Needle, Casper, Allswell, and GhostBed. Compared pricing, review, features, options, etc. In the end we were impressed with the reviews of Purple and liked the options they offered.

We ended up getting the New Purple mattress; queen with a #2 firmness. Not going to lie, I felt bad for the FedEx guy dropping it off because the thing looked heavy. Then I had to drag it upstairs and I no longer felt bad for him, because I was trying not to die. The fucking bed is heavy, which makes sense. A bed should be heavy, right?

Set-up was dead simple. The frame was set-up in 15 minutes and the mattress was ready to be sliced open in another 5. Once I got it all upstairs.

Now, for the sleeping…

It’s been a month, I wanted to make sure we really had some time to adjust, and we’re both sleeping dramatically better. She is able to sleep without me moving around disturbing her, the bed stays cooler during the night, we’re not rolling in to each other, and the bed is silent.

It’s only been a month, so some things will make themselves known over time, but it still feels like I’m getting into a brand new bed every time I get into it. I’m feeling the bed support in areas no other bed ever has and it’s incredibly comfortable on my back or on either side.

So far I do not have a single concern about this mattress. We could not be happier with our purchase and haven’t been sleeping this well in years.

Update: Don’t expect a move to be easy. Transporting a Purple mattress is not an easy feat. Well worth it? Yes! But please do not expect anything less than a lot of sweat and pain.
